Local transit enthusiast here! These are trolleybuses. Those poles are attached to wires that give electricity to the buses. If that bus did not have those wires, it would break down. If a bus does not have those poles, that means it is gas powered!

Those are electric trolleybuses. They’re 100% electric. Unfortunately, they could barely go about 1 block off of the wires. However, TransLink bought new buses which could go 20 kms off the wires. They’ll slowly come into service over the next few years.
