Today, we honor and remember Gunnery Sgt. Darrell W. Boatman, 38, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, who gave his life in service to our great nation on November 4, 2005. Born into a military family, Darrell followed in the footsteps of his father, Roy Boatman, a Vietnam veteran who served four tours. Darrell enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1985, dedicating 20 years of his life to defending our nation. As an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Technician, GySgt. Boatman took on one of the most dangerous responsibilities in the military, identifying and neutralizing deadly explosives to protect his fellow Marines and innocent lives. On November 2, 2005, during his third deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, GySgt. Boatman was critically wounded by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations near Habbaniyah, Iraq. He was evacuated to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where he succumbed to his wounds on November 4, 2005. He left behind his loving wife, Michelle, and their three children, Lauren, Jacob, and Brent. His legacy of courage, leadership, and selfless service continues to live on. In recognition of his sacrifice, the town of North Topsail Beach, North Carolina, named GySgt D.W. Boatman Drive in his honor. Twenty-one years later, we remember not only the Marine who gave his life, but also the husband, father, son, and brother-in-arms whose sacrifice must never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Gunny. Thank you for your unwavering dedication, courage, and ultimate sacrifice. We have the watch from here. His duty was to serve, we will always remember. 🇺🇸 Semper Fidelis. #HonorTheFallen #NeverForgotten #USMC #SemperFi #OperationIraqiFreedom
