@the215lawyer: Katie Zachariah’s distinction between lawyer and attorney is nonsense. She is trying to put herself out there as something that she is not. #presssecretary #katiezacharia #whitehouse #lawyer
Regardless of technicalities anyone who refers to themselves as a lawyer without a license knows they are misrepresenting to the public that they are eligible to practice law

There is a difference quite a difference actually one does not have the bar exam and one does that is considerable - I’m not sure what you are trying to say

Is there a difference between hired and fired? 🤔

I think you misstated. There seems to be an absolute distinction between attorney and lawyer. All attorneys are lawyers, but not all lawyers are attorneys.

As a lawyer/attorney of 45+ years, THANK YOU, thank you, thank you. I've known hundreds who have not passed the bar, none of whom ever called themselves lawyer/attorney. No shame in not passing. Great shame in not passing but trying to take the credit you did not earn.

Several state supreme courts have ruled on this issue as well. Attorney and lawyer are synonymous.

She even goes as far as saying she “practiced law”. Like she had to have known that she can’t practice without passing the bar!!!

I am a licensed attorney in California and would never tell anyone I was a lawyer prior to passing the bar and being licensed by the state!!

Why would she ask twice or more time if the first answer she got was, “yes”. She must have known it’s actually “NO” if she kept asking after the first fictional yes.

Thank you!! This has been driving me crazy. Our profession has rules for this exact reason. Having a JD is only one step in becoming a lawyer. Calling yourself lawyer/attorney/counsel all imply a license.

I took and passed the California bar exam but I WAS NOT a lawyer or attorney or otherwise qualified to practice law or say that I was one of those things until the day I was sworn in. That’s the date that matters because everything until that point was prep and qualification for that event.

A distinction without a difference.

Well here’s the distinction between the two: they both require admission to the state bar.

I became a lawyer in Australia. Never took a U.S. State bar exam. I’ve now been in the U.S. for long enough that even my Australian qualification is technically expired (not stricken). I work in the legal team of a company but I am SO careful about explaining my role for this exact reason. Am I a “trained” lawyer? Yes? Am I a practicing attorney/lawyer? No. Therefore = “I’m on the legal team but I’m not a lawyer”

There's a distinction. Just because the two terms are COMMONLY being used interchangeably, it does NOT mean they're the same. For instance, people often mistakenly call wind turbines as windmills. EVEN people in the energy field use the terminology incorrectly.

The #1 ranked guy in my graduating class failed the bar at least twice (in Kansas, where the pass rate is significantly higher than California). Presumably, he thought he could wing it because he’s smart (he is), but didn’t realize the bar exam isn’t an IQ test — it’s a test to see if you learned how to pass the bar. 😅 Pure rite of passage imo.
