Jada West was a 12-year-old sixth-grade student at Mason Creek Middle School in Douglas County, Georgia. She tragically passed away on March 8, 2026, three days after a physical altercation near her school bus stop in Villa Rica. On March 5, an argument began on the school bus after another student, identified by authorities as “J.S.,” asked students to quiet down so the driver could listen for oncoming trains near a railroad crossing. After exiting the bus in the Ashley Place subdivision, the girls engaged in a brief, mutually agreed-upon fight lasting approximately 17 seconds. Both fell onto the pavement, with J.S. landing on top of Jada. Jada initially stood up and began walking home but suddenly collapsed on a sidewalk. J.S. reportedly returned to help and called her mother, a registered nurse, who provided medical assistance until emergency responders arrived about 10 minutes later. Jada was found in cardiac arrest. Paramedics performed CPR and transported her to the hospital, but she passed away three days later. In October 2026, Douglas County District Attorney Dalia Racine announced that no criminal charges would be filed. An autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation revealed that Jada had an undiagnosed genetic heart condition called Long QT syndrome, which can cause dangerous heart rhythms and sudden cardiac arrest. Medical experts determined that the stress and physical exertion surrounding the fight may have contributed to her cardiac failure. However, they found no definitive medical proof that the altercation directly caused her death. The district attorney’s office concluded that the evidence could not establish a single unlawful cause of death sufficient to support criminal prosecution. Jada’s family, represented by civil rights attorneys Ben Crump, Harry Daniels, and Gerald Griggs, expressed deep disappointment with the decision. Her family maintains that Jada experienced severe bullying after recently transferring to the school. They question whether more could have been done to protect her.
