A vet I volunteered at explained it this way to me when I was young and saw a black cat and a white cat being kept over the Halloween weekend. Even if it is unfounded rumors a few days more won't matter to the right person. They did it out of caution in an age where you couldn't get information on people immediately

i remember as a kid there was a huge dislike towards black cats. however 2 decades later now working in a shelter, i see multiple people a week come into our shelter specifically looking for black cats saying theyre their favorite. times have changed

I just adopted a black cat from a shelter and they did have a lot of questions about why I wanted to adopt a black cat but they let me adopt her. BTW I wanted a black cat because I lost my 13 year old black cat to liver cancer back in April and this new cat just reminded me of her. Similar markings, similar temperament, similar personalities. Also, I just love black cats.

I honestly thought rescued weren't adopting out black cats near Halloween the same way they don't adopt out bunnies near easter - to dissuade poorly thought out gifting of pets. The rumor is *what?!*

Had this conversation with a foster yesterday. It's easier to get a cat for free on Facebook than to pay and fill out an application with a rescue. I'm still careful, but I don't want to stop our black cats from finding a home. They are the longest ones to find homes. Like this boy, Ruckus, is going home tomorrow 🥰

honestly I think if there is any reason to do a pause, it is the same reason my local shelter doesn't adopt out rabbits before Easter and is cautious about adopting out kittens and puppies before Halloween. worry they will be right back in the shelter once the adult or kid gets bored

One person pointed out that some rescues might also be concerned about returns after the holiday like with rabbits after Easter. The worry is that some people are in it for the Halloween photo-shoots and internet likes instead of actually wanting a long-term pet. No clue how true it might be, but an adoption pause isn't the worst thing when you compare it to a cat being moved into a home and then back to the shelter (or put out on the street).

Thank you ! I agree ! So glad you touched on this because I think it’s silly . I understand wanting to be careful . My thing is you should be screening your potential adopters in general . Why is this a concern on a specific month ?

Also if people were doing that they wouldn’t adopt and leave a paper trail they would pick up a poor stray or community cat. 😭🥺 When it does happen as rare as it is they’re not going through the proper channels to get the animal.

A few of our local shelters don’t adopt out black cats from Oct 1 to Nov 10 ish. It’s called a black out.

In Mexico unfortunately is for real, shelters don’t give black cats in adoption during October. Crazy, ignorant people use them for ritualistic purposes.

There's some rescues that doesn't do it correctly. Because my friend was able to get a dog lied about where she lived cause they didn't call anyone.And was able to get a dog when she didn't even have a home. She was temporarily staying with me, but she didn't actually have a place to live. Is a long story, but some places do not do the perfect background check.Like they are supposed to

I’ve seen some humane societies and one rescue near me in IL doing this. It’s so odd!
