@classifiedeast: On 14 February 1979, armed men stopped the car of US ambassador Adolph Dubs on his way to the embassy in Kabul. They forced him to the Kabul Hotel, where he was held hostage in Room 117. American officials urged Afghan authorities to negotiate. Instead, Afghan security forces stormed the room in a burst of automatic gunfire. Soviet security advisers were present at the hotel and US reporting at the time said some played operational roles during the attempted rescue. When it was over, Dubs was dead. The identities and motives of his kidnappers have never been fully resolved. His killing badly damaged US relations with Afghanistan, months before the Soviet invasion transformed the country completely. 📁 CLASSIFIED: EAST
