@thetimes: “I was bullied out of the navy because of my sexuality, and I’ve not received adequate compensation” A Falklands veteran who says he was bullied out of the navy due to his sexuality has criticised a compensation scheme that only benefits those with a formal discharge. Duncan Turnbull, 63, served from 1980 to 1989 and was drafted onto HMS Hermes during the Falklands War. But his career was cut short after reports circulated that he was in a relationship with another serviceman. Faced with regular bullying, humiliation and name-calling, Turnbull handed in his notice and went on to retrain as a mental health counsellor. Homosexuality was banned in the armed forces until 2000. Two years ago, ministers launched the LGBT Financial Recognition Scheme for veterans whose careers were affected by the “gay ban”. It entitles those who were formally discharged because of their sexuality to claim up to £50,000 for wrongful dismissal and a further £20,000 for discrimination. Veterans who left of their own accord, like Turnbull, do not qualify for the full amount, however.
