@guardian.ng: In the old Oyo Empire, an empty, covered calabash symbolised the end of an Alaafin’s reign, reflecting the limits of royal authority and the power of traditional institutions. The Oyomesi, a council of seven kingmakers, could challenge a ruler accused of tyranny. According to historical accounts, the Bashorun, the council’s leader, sent the calabash to signal the withdrawal of support and demand the king’s departure from the throne. The tradition underscored a powerful principle: even a king’s authority was subject to checks and balances. Tomi :
The old Oyo empire had checks and balances in the system... It didn't run an absolute monarchical system, it was more of a constitutional monarchy; though unwritten.
The old Oyo was way ahead of its time... We the Yorubas "traded" well in this "market place" before the foreign s did otherwise.
God bless Nigeria!!!
