🧠 Chess Rules & Complete Guide Chess is a two-player board game where the goal is to trap your opponent’s king so they cannot escape — this is called "Checkmate." The player who delivers checkmate wins the game. 📌 Board & Setup A chessboard has 8 rows and 8 columns, alternating between light and dark squares. Each player places their pieces on the two rows closest to them. Pawns fill the front row. In the back row, from the outermost squares inward: Rooks, then Knights, then Bishops. The Queen stands on the square matching her color, and the King occupies the remaining central square. ♟️ How Each Piece Moves 🪖 Pawn Moves straight forward one square at a time. On its very first move only, it may advance one or two squares. After that, it always moves forward one square only. It cannot jump over pieces and cannot capture a piece directly in front of it. Instead, it captures diagonally forward one square to the left or right. If a pawn reaches the far end of the board, it immediately promotes and turns into any other piece — except a King. 🐎 Knight Moves in an L-shape: two squares in one direction and then one square at a right angle. It is the only piece that can leap over other pieces, whether yours or your opponent’s. It captures by landing directly on the square occupied by an enemy piece. Bishop Moves any number of squares diagonally in any direction, so long as the path is clear. It cannot jump over pieces. It always stays on squares of the same color throughout the entire game. It captures by moving onto an enemy square, stopping before any piece blocking its way. 🏰 Rook Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically across the board, as long as nothing blocks its path. It cannot leap over other pieces. It captures enemy pieces by moving onto their square, stopping just before any piece in the way. 👑 Queen The most powerful piece. It can move any number of squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally in any direction, provided the path is clear. It cannot jump over other pieces, and captures enemies by moving onto their square. 👑 King The most important piece in the game. It can move exactly one square in any direction — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. It may never move into a square where it would be under attack. It cannot remain in a position where it is threatened. There is also a special move called Castling. This moves both the King and a Rook in a single turn to get the King to safety. This is only allowed if neither piece has moved yet, the squares between them are empty, and the King does not pass through or land on a square that is under attack. ⚠️ Key Game States Check When the King is under attack, it is in Check. The player whose King is in check must get out of danger immediately. They can do this in one of three ways: move the King to a safe square, capture the piece that is attacking it, or block the attack with another piece. Checkmate If the King is in check and there is absolutely no way to escape, block the attack, or capture the attacker, then it is Checkmate. The game ends instantly, and the side that delivered checkmate is the winner. Draw Not every game ends in checkmate.
