The stories come from the Shoshone people of the Rocky Mountains. They described a race of small people who lived in the Wind River and Pedro ranges of what is now Wyoming. The name Nimerigar roughly translates to "people eaters". These weren't gentle spirits. The Nimerigar were said to be aggressive, shooting poisoned arrows from tiny bows. They were fiercely protective of their territory and their people. According to the tales, if one of their own was too ill or wounded to continue as a functioning member of the group, they would end that person's life with a blow to the head rather than let them suffer or be taken. That detail—the refusal to be captured—became the most repeated part of the legend. The Nimerigar would rather die on their own terms than fall into the hands of an enemy. The stories stayed stories until 1932. A 14-inch mummy was found in a cave near Casper, Wyoming. It was examined by the American Museum of Natural History and Harvard's anthropology department. Early reports said it was an adult, around 65 years old, with a damaged spine and a smashed skull. The mummy was called the San Pedro Mountains Mummy. Some people linked it to the Nimerigar. A man even offered $10,000 for it in 2005, hoping to prove the legend was real. But later examinations told a different story. The University of Wyoming found the mummy was an anencephalic infant—a baby born with a severe cranial deformity that made the head look small and adult-like. A second mummy tested in the 1990s reached the same conclusion. DNA showed it was Native American, dating to around 1700. The mummy wasn't a Nimerigar. It was a baby with a medical condition. That didn't kill the legend. The stories were never really about the mummy. They were about a people who lived in the mountains, who fought fiercely, and who chose death over capture. Whether the Nimerigar existed or not, the lesson in the story is clear. Some things are worse than dying.
