🚨 UK IMMIGRATION UPDATE: ILR CONSULTATION NOW COMPLETE BREAKING: The public consultation for the major change to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — from 5 years to 10-15 years — is now complete. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is set to announce new immigration reforms soon after reviewing over 200,000 responses. Here is what you need to know: WHAT HAPPENED? The consultation for the Earned Settlement plan closed on 12 February 2026. The Home Office received over 200,000 responses, making it one of the largest immigration consultations ever. As of October 2026, the Home Office is still analysing responses. The Statement of Changes HC 584 published on 3 September 2026 does NOT change the settlement period yet. No final outcome has been published, but a formal response is expected before end of 2026. WHAT IS PROPOSED? Under the Earned Settlement model: • Standard route: 5 years → 10 years to qualify for ILR • Care workers and medium-skilled workers below RQF Level 6: 5 years → 15 years to qualify • Fast-track available based on contributions FAST-TRACK TO STAY IN UK SOONER: • Income above £50,270 for 3 years = reduction of up to 5 years (could get ILR in 5 years) • Income above £125,140 for 3 years = reduction to as few as 3 years to ILR • Other contributions like community volunteering, National Insurance record also to be counted The government has confirmed an Equality Impact Assessment will be published alongside the formal response. No changes will apply retrospectively to those who already have ILR. If you are on Skilled Worker, Care Worker, or other work routes — stay tuned. The announcement will affect millions.
