@epicgardening: GARLIC GERMINATION Garlic requires a winter cold period, known as vernalization, to form proper, large, and divided bulbs. Plant in fall to establish roots before freezing, but avoid planting too early to prevent excess top growth. Larger cloves store more energy for strong spring shoots. Plant them pointy side up and add mulch. In spring, steady moisture fuels the growing bulb.
Just got mine in! Last year Montana Zemo did exceedingly well, and I had HIGE bulbs! So instead of 2 bulbs this year…I did 8, about 30 cloves or so.

You forgot to mention the scapes! Harvest the scapes in June to encourage more growth. Make pesto out of the scapes!

I had a couple single clove plants in my well vernalized plot, I loved them, slightly different flavor, closer to a scape

Question, please. I've grown numerous varieties over the past 10 years (both zones 8a and 6b) but never have planted the cloves 3"-4" deep. I've gotten many bulbs as big as my palm. Would they be more consistently huge if I planted deeper?
