Manama: The Government of Bahrain has rejected a parliamentary proposal to limit health clubs and gyms in Hoora and Gudaibiya, within the Capital Governorate’s First Constituency, exclusively to four- and five-star hotels. The government warned that the proposed restrictions could harm small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), weaken market competition and significantly increase service costs. Minister of Parliamentary and Shura Council Affairs Ghanim Al Buainain announced the decision in Parliament. MPs had called for the restriction over concerns that the growing number of health clubs in residential areas was causing noise pollution and parking difficulties. However, the minister said uniform and transparent regulations already govern health clubs across Bahrain. Imposing restrictions on a specific area, he added, could undermine equal business opportunities. Other Key Government Decisions Tamkeen Support for Athletes The government confirmed that existing Tamkeen programmes would continue supporting the salaries of Bahraini athletes, coaches and employees at local sports clubs, ruling out the need for a separate initiative. 100 New Parking Spaces for Old Muharraq Souq A project will provide 100 additional parking spaces for visitors and traders at Old Muharraq Souq, while preserving as many trees as possible along Sheikh Hamad Street. No Dedicated Land for Car Showrooms The government will not allocate dedicated government land for car showrooms and dealerships. Private investors may establish such projects, provided they comply with existing planning regulations.
