This saves us from meltdowns every single day. One of my favorite parenting moves is putting us on the same team as each other. Or as I like to sometimes call it, " wanting the thing more than they want it". When my young children ask for things or ask to do something that either I cannot give to them or don't want to give to them, it's hard for them to comprehend why they can't have it. Younger than four, they haven't grown the logic side of their brain yet. Older than four, they are learning how to use the new logic side of their brain. So instead of piling on the frustration by telling them "no because I said so" or trying to use reason when they can't understand reason, we make it fun. I put myself on the same team as them by wanting it too and then asking them to give it to me. We work through silly solutions that always make them giggle, and then at the end, I model being okay with not getting the thing that "I want". This technique is a good situation diffuser. Remember that we're not trying to "prove a point" or be mean or sarcastic. We're doing this with kindness, light-heartedness, and fun. I find this works best with five and unders because once they are solid in their logic, it might come across as a lecture. But I do use bits and pieces of this with my almost 6-year-old when I'm trying to help him learn to problem solve and he's in a silly mood! So I think it could be tone adapted for an older audience. . . . . #kelsewhatelse #momtip #gentleparenting #consciousparenting #midwesternmom
