Fans need to realize, Maomao is the main character but not the superhero, she doesn't have the means to help people cause she's also poor, in the palace she can do anything because there's someone powerful she can lean on, but outside the palace she's just an apothecary with debt and mouth to feed

I love how well written and realistic the characters are. Abusive parents think they love their kids but they’re selfish and force them to make dire decisions to survive. The sister is a survivor who will do anything, and Maomao is a flawed realist who in her own trauma at times lacks the empathy of her adoptive father who she admires.

Mixed feelings but I understand Maomao. Sure there are the servant route, but for who will they serve? In that era a servant barely have rights. Once they are in, their life will belong to their master. There will be no one to protect them and their life and frankly, chastity is in jeopardy and no one will or could ever defend them. Look at Shenmei. Shall they lucky enough to enter the palace, the risk of losing their lives will always be there even if the Emperor is good. In Verdigris their livelihood, health, and safety is guaranteed as long as they are in house. Any troublemakers are instantly booted and banned, even if they simply gift a girl drugged chocolate so safe to say Verdigris, the best house, care immensely for their girls. It not the best solution, but it is the best option in Maomao's eyes, esp considering that Verdigris is her own sanctuary. For Maomao, a single misstep in Verdigris wouldn't cost your head, unlike the palace or noble houses. Which also I assumes why she didn't just ask Lakan to make these two as his servant and make their life easier despite having the capability to do so (which is a shame since she can actually do so but yeah Maomao is always pragmatic and had always viewed him and other high status people unfavourably). In her eyes, it a matter of choosing between evil and lesser evil, and Verdigris won out.
