Be honest but gentle, sharing only age-appropriate details. Let her guide the conversation with questions. Reassure her she’s loved and safe, validate her feelings, and remind her she can always talk to you openly, without shame or fear

As a therapist, I would recommend putting your daughter into therapy and allowing her to build a rapport with a therapist and then disclose little by little with just you and her, allow her to ask questions and be completely honest with her. Then allow her to be able to process through things with the therapist because you can’t be that person to help her process through it. I would highly encourage your son getting into therapy as well to help him process through his anger and what’s below that. It’s only going to increase as he gets older if it’s not dealt with. As someone who’s been through DV as well, I’ve had to have some very difficult conversations with my kids and them being able to process through things with the therapist helped significantly and keeping things real because unfortunately the world we live in is not kind and there’s a lot of injustice things that happen. Sending you prayers during this difficult time.

100% agree. My abuser plead guilty to aggravated assault with severe bodily harm and got 6 years probation

Just tell her the truth. It’ll hurt and she probably won’t understand most of it but she needs to know, and she needs to know that sometimes there’s no justice. This world we live in is awful and she’d probably be better off hearing about it from you.

Talk to the therapist to see how they feel would be the best way to start the convo. the therapist possibly knows your daughter enough to know the best way to start that convo.

When my daughter asked me questions as a young adult, my sister advised me to be honest—but to answer only what she asked. You are so wise and empathetic, so I am more than confident that you will handle this well, even though it will be difficult ❤️Love from Sweden.

My abuser gave me the most beautiful soul I could ever ask for… and she was very little but still remembers vaguely some of the things we went thru … be honest with kid gloves because unfortunately the internet is real and evil is out there in the world! You got this mama I’ll say a prayer for strength for you to talk to them and for them to not let the evil change them 💜 she has an amazing mama who will make sure she finds out just as she should 💜 and the justice system is awful for victims 💜

There is no closure, no justice when you escape. You just keep swimming. Live well, live below your means. You are so young. You are gifted. Just keep going.

Please make sure your son sees a therapist to work out how to deal with his anger. Also a therapist may have some ideas about how to speak to your daughter regarding what happened. Each child's different.

I agree just face to face you and her remember you have nothing to prove so don’t give more information than they ask for which can be so hard… You can only control what you can control it’s okay for them to be angry too … you absolutely deserved better The justice system is broken Better to hear it from you than anyone else so she knows she can ask you anything

I hope you find help and answers on how to approach this. I totally understand not wanting to take her to counseling cause it could feel overwhelming for her. When I was going through a very difficult situation and my son was asking about his dad he never met, I went to a counseled myself. I explained age of child, reasons why he never met him, ask for advice on how to address the questions. I told her ideas and I came up with making a scrapbook for him with questions and answers. Etc. i found it helpful to have something to read from with a lot of answers, you can explain how you did everything to protect them. She can also refer back to this scrapbook, to understand more, to learn herself, how to notice when there’s red flags 🚩 or learning how to love herself to know she deserves the best. 🩷 I would try to use it as a teaching opportunity. Just an idea. 🩷 I know you definitely with figure it out and know what’s best for your daughter

I have had to have several disclosures w my 15 year old daughter and they’re hard, horrible, and grueling. I highly recommend: sitting side by side (looking in each others eyes will make it harder and you’ll likely cry more), practice your lines (put them on a notecard as bullet points to condense and have what you want to say ready, not to read but just thoughts sorted), have some small toys or like fidgets or slime or crazy Aaron’s thinking putty to keep your hands busy while you talk. It’ll help! Do it as soon as possible. You don’t want her little mind to fill in the gaps w the worst possible scenario(s) or for her to talk to friends abt it and ask them to look things up, whatever. Also, remember this: you want your baby to keep her empathy and you want to honor that and model that. Well, by avoiding this conversation, it actually hurts you, and anything that hurts her mom or isn’t good for her mom, isn’t good for that baby girl. If that makes sense? Message me anytime. It’s so hard, I’m so sorry. Listening to the YouTube episode helped me understand the depth of how hard your experience truly was.

I have heard you mention your spirituality in the past. Does your family have a clergy member you have a connection to? Perhaps start there?
