"I don't care what happens. You'll get what you deserve." That's the last thing Daniel Waterman said he remembered his pregnant girlfriend saying before she smashed the car they were in into a tree at 94 mph in February 2025. Waterman, a Liverpool native, was on a family vacation in Florida when he and his girlfriend, Leigha Mumby, got into an argument. Mumby was upset with Waterman for texting a woman back home in New York. Experts said Mumby hit speeds of over 110 mph before the crash, which broke Waterman's neck. Waterman was placed in a medically induced coma after the crash. When the 22-year-old finally woke up, he painstakenly pointed to letters on a board to tell his family what had happened, said Heather Waterman, his mother: Mumby had crashed on purpose. "She killed me, she killed me," Waterman told his mother. "She did this. She swerved." As the investigation continued, Waterman was transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse in July 2025. He had been improving when he died of pneumonia on Oct. 8, 2025. Experts later testified that Waterman's broken neck from the crash contributed to him contracting pneumonia. Now, about a year after Waterman's death, his girlfriend has been convicted of killing him. Mumby, 25, of Flagler Beach, Florida, was found guilty Wednesday of vehicular homicide and reckless driving with serious bodily injury. She faces up to 20 years in prison. “It’s a relief the jury got it right,” said Waterman's mother. But the family's fight isn't over. They are waiting for a DNA test to determine if the girl Mumby has since given birth to is Waterman's daughter. Raising the unborn child was Waterman's dying wish, his mother said.
