I think it has something to do with how we process and express emotions. Sometimes, switching to another language creates a bit of emotional distance, making it easier to articulate feelings that might be difficult to express in our first language. English can also give someone access to a different vocabulary for describing complex emotions. So, when emotions run high, the switch can happen subconsciously. However, it varies from person to person depending on their language background and experiences.

but wait, I'm a Zimbabwean and Shona should be my main language but the first language i learnt is English, the first language i mastered is English and even my thoughts are in English. I don't switch languages when talking about feelings, I just continue using English as I would normally.
