It’s actually just wedged between their scales! The younger dragons have them for saddles, but older ones like Vhagar and Vermithor don't because their skin is way too loose and thick.

It explains this in the book. They aren’t impaled, they are placed between the scales as they grow, it’s just so the saddle stays on, there is no control or tugging at the bolts, they don’t help with steering or anything, it’s JUST to hold the saddle on

I believe it’s basically so dragons can 100% understand what their rider wants cuz I can’t imagine they can hear 100% of the time. I’m prolly delulu but I hate the ideas of them being hurt

it doesn't hurt its in the scales wich are very thick and the bolts don't touch flesh nor skin it's like a earring and at most a little uncomfortable like a soft tug here and there old and young dragons don't have it because their scales/skin isn't thick enough. also they don't seem bothered at all no scratching or trying to rub it off

I’m ngl yeah I don’t rly like the idea of look of them either but I can pretty confidently say (even without reading the book and knowing they’re not in their flesh) that reptiles have extremely durable skin and scales and it’s probably more of like a tugging sensation or pressure sensation rather then pain or discomfort and they probably don’t feel much

Goes to show how Daenerys’s children have such a strong connection with their mother, she just holds on and Drogon knows exactly what his mother wants and needs, so does Rhaegal and Viserion.
