This is highly debatable; I think marriages are breaking because people no longer know how to love, or have lost the willingness to practise the responsibilities that love requires, especially in marriage.
Often, the issue is not simply the absence of love, but the absence of the skills, values, and consistent actions needed to sustain it.
Instead of focusing on Spiritual instances(I’m not disregarding Apostle’s message), let's take a look at these more pronounced marriage challenges in the current generation where several features of contemporary life are intensifying existing marital problems. These are not proof that every modern marriage is weaker than marriages in previous generations, but worthy consideration especially for those already in or planning marriage:
1. Instant gratification:
People are accustomed to quick results and may struggle with the patience needed to build trust or work through difficult seasons.
2. The comparison culture:
Online images of luxury, romance, attractive partners, and seemingly perfect families can create dissatisfaction with ordinary married life.
3. Greater emphasis on individual fulfilment: Personal growth and independence are valuable, but conflict arises when individual desires are pursued without regard for shared commitments.
4. Changing gender expectations: Couples may disagree about leadership, decision-making, careers, domestic work, childcare, and financial responsibility, particularly when they have never discussed these expectations clearly.
5. Easy access to alternative relationships: Dating platforms and private messaging have created more opportunities for secrecy and infidelity.
6. Reduced preparation for marriage: Most couples nowadays enter marriage without sufficient understanding of conflict resolution, finances, sexuality, parenting, or the expectations of their marriage.
7. Pressure to appear successful: Couples may hide serious problems to protect their public image instead of working together out of those problems.
8. Fear of vulnerability: Some people find it difficult to admit emotional needs, apologise, ask for help, or acknowledge their contribution to a conflict.
