Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have pleaded not guilty to new charges accusing them of conspiring to torture political opponents and American citizens. The couple appeared before a federal court in Manhattan, New York, on Thursday, October 15, 2026, following the filing of an expanded indictment by US prosecutors. Prosecutors allege that Maduro and Flores were involved in a system of repression involving torture, arbitrary detention, beatings, electric shocks and other forms of abuse against individuals considered thr£ats to their hold on power. Maduro rejected the allegations, describing them as false accusations, while Flores also maintained her innocence. The additional charges expand an existing crim!nal case involving alleged narc0terrorism, c0caine traff!cking and w£apons offences. Both defendants had previously pleaded not guilty to the earlier charges. The trial is now scheduled for June 14, 2027, as the court makes room for the new allegations. The couple remains in US custody as the legal proceedings continue. They are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

A New York mother is turning grief into action after losing her son. On January 26, 4-year-old Axel Hernandez was killed by his father, who then turned the weapon on himself. Axel’s mother, Alexis, says there were warning signs, including alarming text messages the night before. She says police told her nothing could be done. Now, Alexis is working with State Assemblyman Josh Jensen to create “Axel’s Law" to change the current system, which often requires explicit threats or violence before police can act. The proposed law would allow authorities to step in when credible warning signs appear. Jensen says he’s reviewing existing laws and building support among lawmakers. In the meantime, Alexis is honoring Axel through random acts of kindness cards she shares around town. Each includes a QR code to learn about Axel’s Law, sign a petition, and encourage others to pay it forward.
