This is so false. I have no self confidence and hate myself yet I’ve been in the most healthy relationship I’ve ever had. We communicate, we listen, we care for, and we value each other. It’s been going on for 8 years now. So to anyone who hates themselves, don’t listen to this bs. You can hate yourself and still have good relationships and are deserving of love before you love yourself.

I used to get told "love yourself" ALLLLL the time as a teenager. I had no clue what people were talking about. I literally thought it meant to look in the mirror and tell myself "I love you" 😭 I asked my dad what it meant and he hugged himself and said "pamper yourself, put on some body cream" 😭😭😭😭😭😭 I didn't learn what it actually meant until I was 26 and in therapy

it can mean a lot of things but it doesn't mean: "you don't deserve love until you've fixed yourself by yourself". (but you may not recognize love because you've never learnt or experienced what unconditional love is.)

It’s not the worst actually. The unfortunate part of advice is that people only actually understand things based on their own circumstances; that itself proves the point of the quote. Only you give validation to what you experience, someone can love you all they’d like, but if it only means something if you decide/feel it does.

it means a lot of things. another one is that if you cant have a healthy relationship structure with yourself, your relations with other people with trend naturally towards unhealthy and reliant. you need to be able to be yourself with the full confidence of yourself before a truly beautiful love can bloom.
