@thevirusshow: The global outbreak map keeps changing — and these are five of the most important virus stories to watch right now. 🦠 Ebola — DR Congo + Kenya The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak remains the most serious situation on this map. More than 9,000 confirmed cases and over 4,400 deaths have been reported in the DR Congo, while Kenya has now confirmed two linked cases connected to the wider outbreak. Cross-border surveillance and contact tracing remain critical. 🇺🇸 Measles — United States The U.S. has reported more than 4,000 confirmed cases in 2026, with dozens of outbreaks across multiple states. Most confirmed cases are linked to active outbreak clusters. 🦟 West Nile Virus — Europe Europe continues to report locally acquired West Nile infections across many countries. Seasonal mosquito transmission remains active, especially in several southern and central European regions. 🐔 H5N1 Bird Flu — Global / USA H5N1 continues circulating widely in wild birds and has also affected poultry and dairy cattle. Human cases remain sporadic, and current public-health assessments still consider the risk to the general public low. 🟣 Chikungunya — Europe Locally acquired chikungunya cases continue to appear in Europe, especially in France, showing how mosquito-borne viruses are expanding beyond their traditional tropical regions. This is a selected outbreak overview, not a ranking of which virus is most dangerous.
