The ISU-152 testbed with the ESU-125 (
The ISU-152 testbed with the ESU-125 ("Sfera") gun-launcher (also evaluated using converted Object 241 / ISU-122 chassis) was a specialized Soviet experimental vehicle developed around 1964 at VNII-100 (All-Union Scientific Research Institute No. 100). Background & Purpose During the mid-1960s, the Soviet military was heavily researching guided missile armament for armored fighting vehicles under the push of Nikita Khrushchev’s missile-centric defense doctrines. Before mounting complex launcher systems into newly designed low-profile turrets (such as the experimental Object 775 missile tank or Object 757), Soviet engineers required a heavy, stable test rig. Surplus World War II heavy casemate assault gun hulls—specifically the ISU-152 and ISU-122 (Object 241)—offered a ready-made, spacious, and heavily armored platform for static and mobile trials. Technical Overview * The Weapon System (ESU-125 / "Sfera"): * Caliber: 125 mm rifled/smoothbore gun-launcher. * Primary Ordnance: Designed to fire the 9M15 "Rubin" radio-command guided anti-tank missiles as well as experimental "Bur" high-explosive/unguided artillery shells. * Muzzle / Mantlet Assembly: Fitted with specialized diagnostic equipment and unique barrel mounts tailored for internal trajectory testing and missile ejection dynamics. * Vehicle Chassis & Configuration: * Base: Standard ISU-152 / ISU-122 hull based on the IS-tank series suspension. * Casemate Integration: The original 152mm ML-20S (or 122mm A-19/D-25S) gun was removed, and the 125mm ESU-125 assembly was mated to the heavy front superstructure mantlet. * Internal Compartment: Modified to house missile guidance control equipment, telemetry gear, and test instrumentation. Significance in Soviet Tank Design * Testbed Role: The ISU-152 / ESU-125 combination served strictly as an experimental test platform rather than a combat vehicle prototype. * Precursor to Object 775: Data gathered from test-firing the ESU-125/Rubin system on the ISU chassis directly fed into the development of the Object 775 (the famous "pancake" missile tank) and the D-126 / Rubin weapons family. * Transitionary Period: It represents the transition era of Soviet armor design where WW2-era heavy hulls were utilized to pave the way for early Cold War missile-tank concepts. #warthunder #sovietunion #coldwar #viral #viralvideo
