Trump Takes a Swipe at Canada in Alaska—Apparently Forgetting Who Keeps the State Running Donald Trump seems to have had a little geography problem while speaking in Alaska, taking aim at Canada while apparently overlooking one inconvenient fact: Alaska depends on its northern neighbour far more than his rhetoric would suggest. Speaking about his Cabinet at a campaign rally, Trump remarked, “Normally, they don't travel. I think this would be one of the few times. They're so busy doing things, but they felt Canada is so important.” The irony? He was in Alaska, not Canada. Trump then took another swipe at America's northern neighbour, asking the crowd, “And by the way, Canada, I don't know if anybody—does anybody like Canada?” The crowd reportedly responded with boos. But here's the thing: Alaskans don't have the luxury of treating Canada as a punchline. Geography, economics, and everyday life make that relationship far more complicated than a campaign rally sound bite. Alaska relies heavily on Canadian infrastructure to keep its economy moving and its communities supplied. The Alaska Highway is a vital economic lifeline, carrying countless semi-trucks through British Columbia and the Yukon to deliver goods from the lower 48 states. Those trucks aren't making the journey for fun. They're keeping shelves stocked and communities running. For remote communities in Alaska's Panhandle, including Skagway, Haines, and Hyder, cross-border connections are even more critical. Disrupt that trade, and residents could face soaring living costs, supply shortages, and potentially severe isolation. Skagway residents, for example, depend on Whitehorse, Yukon, just across the border, as an important hub for groceries, medical care, and emergency services. So, while political rhetoric might score points with a rally crowd, it doesn't put groceries on shelves, deliver medical supplies, or keep essential transportation routes open. Thankfully, not everyone in Alaska is interested in turning a practical partnership into a political punching bag. Amid broader U.S.-Canada trade disputes and tariff threats, local lawmakers have pushed back against anti-Canadian rhetoric. State Representative Chuck Kopp introduced House Joint Resolution 11 to affirm Canadian sovereignty, protect $1.3 billion in annual bilateral trade, and underscore a simple but powerful message: “We can't imagine Alaska without Canada.” Perhaps that's the point Trump is missing. You can take political shots at your neighbours, but you can't simply wish away your dependence on them. So, the next time someone in Alaska feels tempted to join a chorus of boos aimed at Canada, perhaps they should pause for a moment and consider the bigger picture. Because Canada isn't simply the neighbour next door that makes an easy political target. It's a neighbour Alaska needs. And that's a detail worth remembering long after the campaign rally is over. 💭 Should politicians check maps before making trade threats? Drop your thoughts below.
