Judge Debra McCaslin issued a written ruling in September that Alex Murdaugh's second murder trial will take place in Sumter County, South Carolina. She said today (Friday, October 16) she chose Sumter County "for several reasons." "Security, technology, infrastructure and cost were at the top of my list. I always tell the lawyers the technology in Sumter is amazing. They have an IT technician who is willing to help both of you, the state and the defense, with anything that you need, any kind of electronic equipment," the judge said as Murdaugh appeared before her for a pre-trial hearing today (Friday, October 16). "They have a sally port. There's also secured parking. I think that will be beneficial and to everyone. There's ample parking for the public and the media," McCaslin said. The courthouse also has an assembly room for jurors, which most courthouses in South Carolina don't have. The next hearing on Nov. 13 is the final hearing in Lexington County. All future hearings will occur at the Sumter County Courthouse in Sumter where Murdaugh's trial is to begin on April 5, 2027. Sumter County is east of Columbia and had a population of 105,000 in the 2020 census. The Sumter County clerk attended today's hearing. The judge wants the file from Murdaugh's first trial at the Colleton County Courthouse ij Walterboro taken to Sumter County. "I've also arranged for each the state and the defense to have, for a lack of a better word, a war room. After reading your motions, I think it's appropriate that I call it the war rooms," she said. The South Carolina Supreme Court in May overturned Murdaugh's murder convictions for the June 7, 2021, shooting deaths of his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and their 22-year-old son, Paul Murdaugh, because of a clerk's comments to jurors during his first trial in 2023, including her telling them defense attorneys are "going to say things that will try to confuse you," were "improper external influences on the jury." He's still serving a 40-year prison sentence for federal financial crimes. #law #crime #court
