Abby isn’t the tuffest character. She grew up in the comfortable environment of the Fireflies, and then at the WLF, with access to gyms, quality food, armor, and the support of an entire army. Ellie, on the other hand, is a natural‑born loner and survivalist. All she has is a switchblade, a basic school in Boston, and survival lessons from Joel. She has to be much tougher because she doesn’t have an army behind her.
Abby is much stronger than Ellie. But this physical superiority is built on mass and professional training. Ellie, on the other hand, relies on cunning, stealth, and extreme aggression. She is capable of withstanding the most severe injuries, such as the wound from the spike in Santa Barbara or the broken shoulder in Seattle. She is also more lethal in conditions of a weapons shortage.
Abby broke down immediately after her father’s death, and then spent years nurturing her desire for revenge among a circle of loyal friends. Ellie experienced survivor’s syndrome, the loss of Riley, Tess, and Sam, and then the traumatic death of Joel right before her eyes. She didn’t go crazy and found the strength to stop in the final battle. This proves her incredible inner strength, which Abby lacked in a similar situation. And by the way, Abby almost always works with partners, while Ellie clears Seattle almost alone.
