@theresilientrecruiter: “How soon can you start?” Here’s what that question is actually telling you – and the two versions most candidates mistake for an offer. Save this before your next interview. #jobsearch #secretlanguageofhiring #interview #creatorsearchinsights #careertok
I said I would need 6 weeks from the time I receive the offer. Time to close out what I have and hand off, burn through PTO, and have some time between roles.

I just got this question in Round 2 interview with VP. I told her that I’d like to give 2 weeks notice, and she grimaced. I told her that any candidate that will leave their current employer with no notice will do the same to her. I got an offer email 3 hours later:

My answer is always enough time to give my current employer two weeks notice.

I’m a highly educated and motivated professional, but I can’t deal with the cloak and dagger business in corporate America. Say what you mean, and mean what you say. Isn’t that the foundation of trust? 😭

Even if I’m not working, I say 2-3 weeks. I need transition time.

My mom is a hiring manager and she lectured my brother and I that leaving without a 2 week notice is unprofessional. She told me that, lets say, this one job does not work out and you have the option to return to your ex employer. You want to leave with the best impression so you still have that option.

I moved from the US to Northern Ireland and getting some distance made me realize how unusual American work culture is to the rest of the world. I work in HR and if someone here suggested adding this kind of trick question for an interview everyone would be weirded out and annoyed they’d probably say something like “do you want to fill the role or not why are you making it more complicated than it needs to be”

Immediately is the only correct answer I’m so tired of boomer advice no corporations really care about a 2 weeks notice they understand that the candidates position will be filled almost immediately once they leave

But does one week really matter when it comes to two candidates— one who can start in the typical 2 weeks & the other who can start in 3 weeks?

I just had a second/final round interview last Friday and was asked this. They said they’re looking to fill the role quickly (they lightheartedly said they needed to fill it yesterday) as they were transparent about the vacancy being because the person in that role was promoted within the company and they started their new role today. I stated I wanted to be able to give 2 weeks, that seemed like an okay answer for them, as they did state earlier a background check would be required so I figured that would also give time for that. So i’m hoping even though they’re looking to fill it quickly that they’re realistic and unless the person is unemployed that it might be a couple weeks for someone to start 😅🤞🏽

What if you are trying to get another job in a different city but cannot move for 30 days due to lease obligation? What is the best way to handle that?

Been hiring 20 years as an HM and a recruiter. These people are making shit up. If we ask how soon you can start, its logistical, not a trick

what if you have a flexible job? seems like these recruiters assume you’re leaving an old job for a similar one.

so I just had an interview with this question and I was straight up about it. "I can start immediately" and I think I know the reason they ask: they send new employees to two different cities for training for a week each. so I guess they want to know if you can make that commitment. hopefully by being open thanks to being laid off that put me above a lot of candidates cause they were also honest about how strong the competition was

I met with a recruiter about an internal opportunity and she says I’m required to let me current supervisor know if the team decides to meet me for what I would assume would be a “final” interview. Never heard of that - thoughts?
