What is the tilma In 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Juan Diego in Mexico. When he opened his tilma before the bishop, a full color image of the Virgin was suddenly imprinted on the cactus fiber cloth. No artist. No paint session. No preparation. It survived a bomb blast In 1921, a bomb hidden in flowers exploded directly beneath the tilma. The marble altar shattered and nearby objects were destroyed. The tilma was completely unharmed. Even the glass covering it remained intact. Physics cannot explain this outcome. No aging or decay Paintings from the same era show cracking, fading, and oxidation. The tilma shows none. The colors remain vibrant. The fibers remain intact. Time has not touched it the way it touches everything else.
