@elite.recruiter: Your boss can genuinely think you are exceptional and still be the reason you are not getting promoted. Those two things are not contradictory. They happen all the time. The question is not whether your boss thinks you are doing a good job. It is whether they are actively spending political capital to move you forward. If you have been next in line for more than a year, you are probably not actually in line. My boss just stabbed in the back after he got promoted. I’m being considered for his now former job and it’s like he’s sabotaging me. I hope me VP sees through his BS.

I just had a chat with their boss and their boss had a chat with the COO and now the budget doesn’t seem to be a problem anymore. Magic ✨

My boss once told me: “The problem with promoting you is that I’d lose you.”
Well, guess what? I never got the promotion, but he lost me anyway. I left. 😏

This is exactly true me for three years, I was in exactly the position you've described. Since then, I've moved on, been promoted into a new role with a new company, and ended up where I probably should have been all along. What I've learned is that organisations adjust, even when they lose good people. They accept a lower standard, carry on, and keep moving. The reality is that no one is truly irreplaceable, no matter how good they are.

I feel your statement, but I also think if your boss is also interested in progressing further, it can be beneficial that when he steps ups, that he can recommend you for his old job. Meaning that you still report to him, but now both have new roles.

i mean if they wont promote you you can leave the company and that would still lead to you leaving the team so why not just support your fav

or they're just secretly a manipulative hater who doesn't want you to grow, so they pay lip service by verbally praising you but will do nothing to help advance your growth. Instead, they're secretly being your stumbling block whilst using you as their stepping stone. Ask me how I know.. 😏
