There’s ZERO downside for the dealer to work with you. He’s sitting at zero card sold and could get a potential sale and at worst you do what he fears. But he will ensure no sale by not sending a cost breakdown.

Why do they always act like offering a discount, then not making that sale, is like ragnarok and the dealership will close. Who cares if you offer a price and the person uses it to shop around. It’s not like you lost the car just sell it to someone else

I’d be like, well, the other dealership said they would sell the car to another interested party who’d be willing to pay markups and I said I’m gonna let them do that, lol. That’s why I’m giving you guys an opportunity to present a fair deal and earn my business as an educated consumer.

worst case: they shop your price and you get beat. oh well, all you did was send some numbers over the phone. no labor or big amount of time. best case: YOU GET THE EASIEST DEAL EVER. people let their prides get in the way, plain and simple

This is absolutely true as a dealer. Are there dog shit, sketchy dealerships? Ofc. But not all dealerships are that way. Yet MANY customers paint us all with the same broad stroke. So when you talk to them on the phone, they’ll say whatever they need to to get you to send them a buyers order with the price they want, and will immediately go to the closest dealership, where they ALREADY HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE, and slam that buyers order the GOOD DEALERSHIP gave them on to the table as a big F you to them, and also an F you to the good dealership. Bottom line, dealerships can be bad, but there’s wayyyy more bad people buying cars than there are bad people selling cars. I get why this guys page is as popular as it is, but he reinforces the mindset that encourages customers to be manipulative, rude, and demanding shit heads.

Why not just tell him you’ll take it for $xx,xxx and leave a non-refundable deposit over the phone to secure the deal? Wouldn’t that be much much easier?

This dealer is forgetting that even if he took the written deal elsewhere, he'd likely get their counter deal in writing and bring it right back to him. Repeat until the best price is found 🙃
