@japdmedia26: Stillwater, Oklahoma, USA 🇺🇸 — A man who spent years searching for his stolen $6,000 Yamaha four-wheeler is now fighting to recover it after a sheriff’s office claimed ownership of the vehicle. Stacey McCurry reported the ATV stolen from his property in 2020. Grady County deputies recovered it in 2021, but the vehicle was not returned to him. “This is the title and bill of sale for that four-wheeler. So I have proof that it's mine,” McCurry said. According to reporting by KOCO 5 News and KOSU, the Grady County Sheriff's Office later obtained a court order transferring the title into the county's name. Officials said the ATV had been treated as unclaimed property and that the department spent public money repairing it. When McCurry tried to reclaim the vehicle, he was reportedly told: “I asked him, 'Can I come down and get my four-wheeler?' And he said, 'No, it's ours,'” he revealed. Undersheriff Kori Brewer said the department spent approximately $1,060 on parts and argued that the county could not simply hand over a vehicle already titled in its name. McCurry even offered to reimburse the repair expenses, but the dispute continued. The case has also raised questions about how the ATV was recorded in the national stolen-property database. Payne County officials and Grady County officials have disputed aspects of the reporting and registration history. McCurry has taken legal action to recover the vehicle. His case is part of wider scrutiny of the Grady County Sheriff's Office over its handling of property. Oklahoma law generally states that recovered stolen property should be returned to its lawful owner without unnecessary delay. However, disputed ownership and court orders can complicate the process. The central question remains: How did a reportedly stolen vehicle end up titled to the county, and will McCurry get it back? Oklahoma #PayneCounty #GradyCounty #StaceyMcCurry #japd

if it was reported stolen prior to their claiming it then any court should overturn that and return it to him. unless we are dealing with a corrupt judge

Sounds like the person who filed to transfer it should be in trouble and whoever approved repairs with taxpayers money and the the sheriff for continued delay

That’s shady what else have they keep. Everything in the sheriffs office possession needs to be run through a database to see.

so they going by the "finders keepers" mentality, they knew who it belonged but failed to inform that they had it after it was found, I had a similar but because I had settled insurance on the motorcycle it now belonged to insurance company, but I did get notified it had been found

That’s some good ole fashion fruad rite dare. I think ole board of supervisors needs to tell him to go pick out a thing similar and county will gladly pay plus a new trailer plus some big tires and a deep water exhaust

So they stole it after making it impossible to locate in the Stolen Goods database? Send them to the clink. So tired of two different sets of rules.

The first thing he needs to do is contact the Oklahoma Dept of Public Safety and establish that the Sheriff’s office even entered it into the NCIC database. If they did, report the Sheriffs Department for failure to be in compliance for not notifying the owner that the 4 wheeler was located. Those records have to be validated and every department that uses that system has to be in compliance or they risk being fined and losing the privilege to use that FBI database.
