@one_real_cosmonkey: I am so completely fascinated about this the more I think the more there is to think about. Also yes, I did get another haircut. #projecthailmary #phm #erid #rylandgrace #rocky
Would they even have fire on Erid? Since it needs at least a 16% oxygen concentration but their atmosphere is mostly ammonia? Even earths atmosphere is only 21% oxygen.

Actually I’m pretty sure that Erid doesn’t have any moons because it’s too close to its sun!

another thing about erid's moon(s) is that any moons they may have are almost certainly tiny compared to the planet bcs like, our moon is ~27% the size of earth and that is actually MASSIVE for a planet our size (the next closest ratio we know of is triton being 5.5% the size of neptune) and iirc erid is supposed to be much larger than earth as well as, obviously, being much closer to its sun so i imagine it would be somewhat more difficult for such a large moon to form, my point being any individual natural satellites that erid has would likely have a negligible affect on erid's tides compared to how our moon affects ours
also i do want to hear the conversation on eridians being carbonate producing creatures if you wish to go on such a rant

i mean erid is based off an actual planet no? for the moon question we could probably see if the irl planet has moons and how many, if its anything other than 1 we are kinda back at square zero (and obviously this is ignoring the possibility its Just Different Because Fiction)

True enough. Different gravitational environments would suggest different tides and different tidal effects, such as erosion and flooding that creates fertile River deltas. And different atmospheric density implies different available illumination on the planet's surface. And what about sunspots causing Aurora borealis? What do you get when hot ammonia becomes electrically charged by solar wind?
These are all great questions and it's the kind of thing that makes hard sci-fi so much fun!

From an interview I saw of Andy explaining the geology of Erid has:
atmospheric pressure 29x earth's;
it spins so quickly that days are 6 earth hours;
the atmosphere is made of ammonia (which predominantly eliminates free roaming oxygen-hence the particular biology of Eridians);
the oceans are 200°C due to the pressure and ammonia containing such extreme heat being contained but that *isn't* boiling temperature

you're comparing Erid to earth, while it is closer to venus or mercurius.
.
Erid has 2g, a thick atmosphere, a very fast turn around time and 3 stars. this means that is has strong gravitational force between Erid and at least 3 celestial bodies so tides and winds would absolutly exist.
.
wind is made by trying to offload exstensive air pressure and sometimes influenced by strong tides (and vice versa). considering that Eridani is descirbed to have multiple layers of air with only the top getting sunlight wind it is highly likely if not guarenteed to be present.
.
as for stones. because of the atmosohere and the ground being mostly made from amonia and high mass Elements. Meanwhile is chalk very hard to be synthesid without the help of carbon based live thus it is much more likely that Ammolite is one of their common stones istead of limestone. Although the conditions on Erid would be more extreme, because the ground/stone is made from stronger materials it would erose slower then on Earth.
