We, Muslims, stand in solidarity with veiled women in Azerbaijan: Freedom, Religion, and the Right to Education The freedom of belief and the practice of religious rituals are considered fundamental pillars that guarantee human dignity and inherent rights. In light of the challenges faced by Muslim women in some aspects, Islamic and human solidarity comes as a moral duty and a stance reflecting the unity of principles and values that bind the ummah. From this standpoint, we stand shoulder to shoulder today with our veiled sisters in Azerbaijan to reaffirm their legitimate right to adhere to their religious identity without compromising their academic and professional future. The Hijab: An Identity and an Inherent Human Right For a Muslim woman, the hijab is not merely an outward appearance, but rather an inseparable part of her identity and creed. Restricting the practice of this right or placing obstacles before veiled women—especially in educational institutions—represents a violation of the opportunities for growth and empowerment, and contradicts the principles of freedom of choice and dignity stipulated in international human rights covenants.
