Monica Ryadi, 30, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at Los Angeles International Airport on September 15, 2026. She was traveling with her husband, Steven Sary, and their three-year-old son, both U.S. citizens. 'I didn't think about myself, and I just thought about my son and the fact that he had to witness the whole thing,' Ryadi told ABC News. Ryadi came to the United States at age nine after her family fled religious persecution in Indonesia. She works as a registered nurse in Pennsylvania. The Department of Homeland Security says she overstayed her original permission to remain in the country and received a removal order in 2010. However, her attorney, Eric Rosenfeld, says an immigration judge granted her withholding of removal, a form of protection against deportation to a country where she could face persecution. On September 29, a federal judge ordered Ryadi released from detention under supervision with GPS monitoring. She was reunited with her family. On October 15, Ryadi attended an ICE check-in in Philadelphia alongside supporters and Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon. Her legal team is seeking to challenge the restrictions and continue fighting her case. Scanlon said, 'Monica's case is particularly unforgivable.' Ryadi also expressed her connection to the country, stating, 'This is my home. I built a life here. I wouldn't know what to do if they were to send me to another country.' Her release has not settled the dispute.
