@robandsumnersmemorylane: Alan O'Day - Undercover Angel (1977) Alan O'Day was already a massive force in the music industry long before he stepped up to the microphone himself. He was a highly sought-after songwriter who penned major hits for other artists, including a number one smash with Helen Reddy's "Angie Baby" and the Righteous Brothers' "Rock and Roll Heaven." When O'Day finally recorded his own material, "Undercover Angel" became his massive solo breakthrough. The song tells a slightly quirky, nocturnal story about a lonely man who is visited by a mysterious "angel" in his bedroom. It brilliantly masked somewhat suggestive, mature undertones behind an incredibly catchy, innocent-sounding AM pop melody that listeners of all ages loved. Released in 1977, the track was the very first single issued by the newly formed Pacific Records label, and it defied the odds by climbing all the way to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. This rare achievement made O'Day one of the few songwriters in music history to both write a number one hit for someone else and perform a completely different number one hit for himself. In a fascinating career pivot, O'Day later shifted away from the pop charts and became a legend in 1980s television. He went on to write and produce over 100 songs for the classic Saturday morning cartoon Muppet Babies, including co-writing its iconic, synthesizer-driven theme song. #VinylRecords #70sMusic #SoftRock #PopMusic #ClassicHits
