The future is AI replacing SWE’s, stop giving false hope

Don’t go learn CS. If you want to be in tech learn design or product management and how to use AI. As a SWE with 15 years + experience you will not need to know what the AI is coding by next year. We’re cooked. You need to be able to understand the customer need, articulate that into a design and build it.

CS teaches you theory and fundamentals, projects outside of school and internships teaches you the practical aspects of programming. 🤷🏽♂️💯

CS major here, they still teaching code, also i have a friend that works in Microsoft. His a senior and told me they still hiring but understanding the code is more important to review the AI generated code. AI will build it but you need to understand how it works to review it.

I feel like I’m fairly experienced with prompting agents such as Claude to help with tasks and problems, but my question is what will set me apart from someone else if we are both candidates for a position? Or just in general what makes me different from someone else if we both can use AI with high proficiency? I’m feeling stuck because I think anything I can do someone else can

I work alongside a school for proper AI usage in the CS field. We’re now at a point where the students can use AI properly. They usually get told whether they are allowed to use AI. It’s super interesting how people vary in results based on how much thought is put in. The ones that put in the assignment were on average the worst performers. The ones that thought before prompting were better. And the few that understood how to code were actually the best performers.

I work a swe if FANG+ and the slop product managers and design produces never makes it into our prod. manually coding is done but you still have to understand it and properly architect.

Agreed but in order to give good prompts you have to know the code base/workflow

My university compsci program actively encourages using AI. My machine learning class has us doing a both a kaggle competition to learn the coding side and also has a vibe coding project (both are semester long projects we iterate on). My software engineering class has us all signed up on the university's claude subscription for the semester long team project. My OS and Concurrency class teaches and quizzes us on the concepts, but the end of semester project will be one focused on system design and process and not low level coding (we get assignments and examples in java to learn the general ideas, but they no longer go deeper on the c++ side like they used to do). So, we do both code and AI usage focused on design. They actually started shifting gears this way about 2 years ago.

Eh agree to disagree. I would say learn how to code really well with no AI in atleast one OOP language not a scripting language and them get into Ai Code because no matter how much you try to avoid it companies are still giving out non AI hackerrank screenings. They still doing google doc technically interviews. You will never be a good SWE if you dont alr know one language front and back and you can use it with no internet and make something decent. (Pick C++ or Java)

Dude the Small Basic language was made for kids. My first programming class was in C++. My favorite language was C when optimizing and working with memory allocations.

Bruh i was learning programming as a kid just because. I literally learned binary for fun. Im so glad i use AI to speed applying my knowledge to a new code base

learn like 1 language preferably go then learn system design and ur good to go you can review code that the ai writes for u.
even Linus the creator of the linux kernel said that people who code manually are idiots.

I work at a big tech company where we have pretty much unlimited Claude usage and I still find myself auditing even the latest models from Claude. It's definitely not perfect still and requires human intervention and thought behind the code. I definitely agree to some extent with what you said, but if you don't know how to code then you're gonna be dead weight
