It’s been 20 years since Soni Pabla passed away. Soni lived in Brampton, and even today, his friends, music teacher, people who worked with him, and even those who had only met or seen him once still talk about how down-to-earth and simple he was. October 14, 2006, marks 20 years since the tragic passing of Soni Pabla. Originally from Bilaspur, Punjab, Soni moved to Canada in the early 1990s and settled in Brampton. He had a strong passion for music and worked different jobs to support himself and to make a living while pursuing his dream of becoming a singer and building a career in the Punjabi music industry. In the late 1990s, Soni Pabla studied music in Mississauga under Ustad Mahesh Malwani. After a lot of hard work, effort, and struggle, Soni released his first single, “Sada Kehra Number,” with Planet Recordz in 2001. That same year, he released a cover song and later a boliyan track with Jolly Bawa, Sukhdev Darapuria, and Amarjit Sandhu, which appeared on Nav’s album Pushing the Limits. In 2002, Soni released his debut album, Heeray Heeray, produced by Aman Hayer and DJ Sunshine from Toronto. Between 2002 and 2004, Soni released a few singles with producers in the UK and Canada. In 2004, he gained wider recognition with the song “Sohneyo Naraazgi Te Nahi — Gal Dil Di Je Ik Keh Deyan.” The song was recorded and produced in Brampton and released on Behind the Scenes. After that, Soni Pabla released his second album, Gal Dil Di, produced by Sukshinder Shinda. The album was a huge success, especially within the Toronto Punjabi music scene. Soni said that “Panjeeb Yaar Di” brought him closer to the Punjabi community. In 2006, Soni released another successful track, “Boli Panieh – Summer Jam Mix” with DJ Sanj. The song became a massive hit and, even today, continues to be played today Following his album Gal Dil Di and Boli Panieh Soni began working on new projects, “Rise Up” with Joti Dhillon. During the summer of 2006, Soni was signed by Moviebox in a exclusive deal for his UK work. He began sending his vocals to UK-based producers who wanted to work with him and have him featured on their albums, including projects with artists such as Tarli Digital and Kami K. Soni was also preparing for his third album with Sukshinder Shinda and was very excited about the project. He also had many shows booked and was preparing for upcoming music videos that were scheduled to be filmed in Toronto. Then, on October 14, 2006, Soni Pabla tragically passed away. His funeral in Malton and at Dixie Gurdwara had a huge turnout. There was no parking, and people from across the community came out to pay their respects. Children even made boards and posters for Soni. This was before social media, yet so many people still came out to show their love and respect for Soni. That entire week, everyone was in shock in Toronto. His music was being played everywhere, there was a lot of emotional tributes especially on Vision TV. Soni was a local singer whose songs were played regularly on Vision TV on Saturdays. He also attended many local events and melas in the Toronto area and was part of Nach Di Jawni and was seen around in Toronto area living his life whether that’s shopping or getting groceries #sonipabla @Gurminder Maddoke @Sukshinder Shinda
