PAIRED PASSAGES – Surving the Sea [37:142] Is your hardship a punishment from Allah, or could it be a test? The event alone cannot tell you. The Quran draws a striking connection between Prophet Yunus عليه السلام and Pharaoh through the phrase “wa huwa mulim” in Surah As-Saffat (37:142) and Surah Ad-Dukhan (44:24). Both stories involve the sea. Both men faced a moment of distress. But their responses and outcomes were completely different. Prophet Yunus عليه السلام turned to Allah in repentance: لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ “There is no god worthy of worship except You. Glory be to You! I have certainly been among the wrongdoers.” (Quran 21:87) Pharaoh, on the other hand, only declared his faith when drowning was already upon him (Quran 10:90–91). His late declaration could not save him. So what can we learn from these two stories? 1. Look at your past. Were you turning to Allah before the hardship came, or only remembering Him when things became difficult? 2. Look at your present. When hardship strikes, do you acknowledge your mistakes and turn to Allah, or do you look for excuses? 3. Look at what comes next. Does the experience lead you towards repentance and better actions, or do you return to the same mistakes once the difficulty passes? We cannot claim to know whether a particular hardship is Allah's punishment or a test. But we can examine our own response to it. The same sea witnessed two very different endings. Don't judge your situation by what happens to you alone. Look at how you respond to it. #QuranReflection #IslamicReminder #ProphetYunus #Pharaoh #IslamicKnowledge
