manipulators do this because it emulates the behavior of good people. if you're concerned about doing that, you're much less likely to be a manipulative person, but self reflection is important regardless

I think a manipulator is somebody offers the image of being a good person without actually following through. like offering to host dinner when I knew they would not say yes and I didn't actually want to host dinner for them would be manipulation.

accountability and consideration are more important to be on watch for than manipulation and malice. you can create the situation you are trying to avoid by looking for it
