@cdkidwell04: Cohen is 4 years old and lives in Pleasanton, Texas. He was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. The left side of his heart did not form the way it should have. Within a day of being born, his body went into cardiogenic shock. Since then, he has made it through two open-heart surgeries. On October 19th, surgeons will take him back for a third. It is called the Fontan procedure. During the same operation, they plan to try to fix a valve in his heart that is leaking. His doctors expect a hospital stay of three weeks, at minimum. Then came news his parents did not see coming. His mom, Brooke, says her husband’s employer is going bankrupt. That means a new job for him. It also means new health insurance, starting November 1st. The family has already paid thousands of dollars toward Cohen’s deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. On a new plan, that progress could disappear. And Cohen would still be lying in a hospital bed. Halloween will come and go while he recovers. So Pleasanton did not wait for it. Neighbors put together an early Halloween for him. One car after another rolled past his house, carrying treats, with people waving at the boy inside. A little boy with a hard week ahead got to watch his town show up for him. A 4-year-old needs a third heart surgery. His dad needs a new job. His family may have to start over on his medical bills. Brooke is asking for prayers for the surgeons, for the valve repair, and for Cohen’s heart to hold up through the operation and the weeks that follow.
