she died in a unfamiliar place after possibly being forced to be with a man twice her age after being held captive and abused by the settlers after watching her real husband that she loved die right in front of her while her tribe was burnt to ashes and had to make the heartbreaking decision to give up her son that she had with her husband so he could have a chance to survive, yeah they ain’t getting the bear back.

Historian and Anthropologist here! The crazy thing about this is an archaeologist or an anthropologist would be able to identify her bones quite easily, and not only that, we would be able to roughly identify the other people on those grounds as well. Everyone who has been placed there would be able to have identification and a proper re-burial. Mind you, digging up massive amounts of land to go over burials like these are conducted in England often enough. They've been able to dig up mass graves of gladiators from when Rome had settlements there (which is quite fascinating in what has been found but that's another story). The fact of the matter is this: they don't want to pay for it. They do not want to hire a team from a university, institution, what have you, they don't want to pay for any equipment or testing that may need to be done, and they don't want to deal with the possible year or more that it would take to do the project. They don't want to pay for her remains to be sent back, or for any remains to be properly placed with new identification, or for the restoration of the grounds themselves to be fixed in the end. I fully believe her remains are there and that any of us could be brought in to easily find her. They just won't do it as they view it as a waste of money, and quite possibly, they view her as a piece of their history to not give back as well...which is fucking hilarious if you ask me.

I remember watching the Disney movie in 8th grade, with my teacher giving running commentary about every single thing that was wrong. This was in 2001/02, so the movie had been out for a few years. I have started doing this with my own daughter, especially now that we homeschool.

Pocahontas was her tribal nickname meaning playful one, the name Matoaka is her PRIVATE familial name only to be user by Mother, Father, Sister, Brother. Her public name (what WE should be referring to her as) is Amonute! I know this knowledge isn’t talked about but please please spread the word because using the name Matoaka is more disrespectful than using Pocahontas would be!!
