@overachieving_paraplegic: I wasn’t fond of the word “Crippled” prior to my injury. I believed it to be an outdated and typically offensive-sounding word. Now, after having a spinal cord injury, I feel a bit more justified in sharing my opinion on it. When one of my 3rd grade students used the word crippled to describe someone walking with a cane, I simply encouraged them to use a different word because “crippled” doesn’t sound as kind or understanding as other words can. I wish I felt more comfortable having these conversations with adults. However, adults get defensive and offended much easier than most children. #spinalcordinjury #paraplegic #wheelchairuser #disabledteacher #crippled

I love this! people are not taught the right words to use. especially kids, and they just use the words they know. and you can almost always tell how they mean it. sometimes things don't come out the appropriate way because they don't know what's appropriate ❤️
