Kraken’s owner just agreed to buy a bank. Go to coinpicks.app or tap the link in my bio to learn how to grow your crypto without selling it. Payward, the company behind Kraken, announced on October 14th that it’s buying Saldo Bank in Lithuania. The Financial Times says that would make it the first crypto company to buy a bank in Europe. And Saldo’s a real bank. It’s licensed by the European Central Bank, it takes deposits in four countries, and it makes consumer loans. Payward didn’t say what it’s paying. So why does a crypto exchange want a bank? Because an exchange can’t pay you interest on deposits or lend you money. A bank can. Payward says it would give its customers in Europe deposits that pay interest, loans, cards and euro payments, all in one place. Arjun Sethi, Payward’s co CEO, said it gives customers “one place to hold assets, move them freely, and put them to work.” And he told the Financial Times the plan is to let customers borrow against their assets without selling them. When most holders need cash, they sell their crypto, and the moment they sell, they’re out. Borrowing against it means you get the cash and keep holding. That’s how wealthy families have always used their stocks and their houses. And Kraken’s doing it in America too. On March 4th, its Wyoming bank got approved for a limited master account at the Federal Reserve, a direct line into the Fed’s payment system. On May 8th, Payward asked the OCC, the federal regulator for national banks, for a national trust charter, and that one’s still pending. Payward’s been on a buying run all year: Bitnomial for up to $550 million in April, and Reap Technologies for up to $600 million in May. And its banking side has already made more than $2 billion in loans. The deal still needs regulators to sign off, and Payward expects it to close in 2027. And if you ever borrow against your crypto, anywhere, know exactly how far the price can drop before the lender sells it. Crypto companies are becoming the banks. Follow for the next one.
