I try to match the other person's grip but sometimes I feel like I start too hard and I feel like the other person thinks I'm trying to show off on the other hand, the small amount of times someone has done it to me, I've learned to just go limp, it catches them off guard and they give up because they're not getting what they want it also saves you from being pulled because when they pull you while you're limp only part of your body moves forward compared to if you try to compete your whole body moves as a unit it's also good if it does escalate to a fight, your hips are in a way better position with the limp method
