Never missed an episode. Never liked Kate but I feel bad I didn’t pick up on more with Collin and what he was going through. Did producers not see this? Or it was just acceptable back then?

I watched it and remember thinking she was an awful person but don't recall thinking about the poor kids and the lifelong impact. I had two babies of my own at this point. 😢 It was the Holderness family a few years later that opened my eyes to exploiting their kids.

I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the story of the Dionne Quintuplets…it’s worth a deep dive. Five baby girls born in Ontario in the 1930s and terribly exploited; they actually had daily public viewings of them at play, among many other intrusions of privacy. Anyway, I remember years ago watching Jon and Kate Plus 8 and having this epiphany that I was witnessing the modern day version of the Dionne Quints. I immediately turned off the TV and never watched again. My heart goes out to Collin and all children whose privacy has been stolen and their childhood exploited.

im 39 and grew up watching these shows on TLC too. we were kids watching kids. the executives who oversaw The Gosselins, The Duggars, and Little People/ Big World need to be INVESTIGATED ASAP

I stand by the adage when you know better do better - and you are. I’ve been guilty of this as well. TLC and all those reality family shows. It’s heartbreaking to me to think of the part I played in their exploitation

Sadly child stars have often been exploited both by the network and parents or guardians who were supposed to keep them safe. The Donna Reed show young son has spoken about his experience with being exploited

Gosh. I watched it back in the day too. I just thought the kids were so cute. I thought Kate was unhinged toward Jon but I truthfully didn’t think of the kids. As soon as I saw Collin’s book, I ordered it. Mom guilt and parent tax bc I feel like I didn’t quite know better. This poor sweet kid who never asked for it.

YEEEES I did too and feel horrible I contributed to it, in the last few years I have stopped following those accounts and won't even watch a video of minors I don't know that someone shares with me, it's just disgusting 😔

I’m reading his book now. I never watched the show but my husband worked for the production company so I had a lot of inside knowledge. What is so eye opening is I used to use my kids as content before this was a common conversation. My youngest is now 14 and can verbalize that he wants me to scrub my accounts of him. I’m so glad I stopped. I’m a private account now across all platforms. Thank you for speaking out. You definitely made me rethink what I was doing.

I watched two, but I think the hardest part is not noticing how much of it was just him. I quit watching because I couldn’t stand how horrible of a person she is and how mean she was to the kids and how she talked to her husband, but I think the worst part is not noticing how much of it was on him.
