@susieqbeee: I married into a Tongan family, and losing my husband’s sister has given me an entirely different look at grief, family and community. 🤍 I want to respectfully share some of the Tongan funeral traditions I’m learning because this is so much bigger than a single service. Part 1. #TonganCulture #TonganFuneral #PacificIslanderCulture #FuneralTraditions #LearnOnTikTok
Yessss when I lived in Tonga it’s three days!! And no music or sports, no celebrations during that time. The whole village mourns with the family and is helping cook and clean. It was so eye opening to me being from the states.

As someone who had to bury her parents, Tongan funerals are so exhausting. But beautiful nonetheless ❤️

Condolences 🤍 this is a shorter much more manageable version of a “Tongan funeral”. It can be a lot but it’s so beautiful. Most Tongan funerals can last a week to two weeks. Sometimes longer depending on the person, if they held a title and sometimes what religious denomination they were… but ultimately it always depends on the funds and commuting of certain relatives. It’s so nice watching non-Tongan family members share their experiences & allowing themselves to immerse and take in our culture. Thanks for sharing 🤍 Ofa atu

so im guessing this goes with all pacific islanders. im micronesian and ours lat 18 days. the first 9 days will be with the general public (friends, acquaintances, etc) and the next 9 days strictly for immediate family.

in my tribe we have a 4 day wake then burial. the family sits up and stays awake with them and we breakfast, lunch, dinner and midnight meal. taking that extra time is so important to the greif process..this sounds so beautiful, I would love to hear more if your husband decides to share 🙏🏽 sending sympathies and prayers for your loss
