in 1997, I attended an intense meeting about blackberry pagers with my Financial Services IT security team to discuss who got pagers that worked locally, who got pagers that worked nationally and who got pagers that had keyboards for response. The meeting lasted about two hours, and based on the attendance of personnel from the VP down, cost the company more than if they gave everyone pagers with keyboards and Bloomberg news alerts, but never had the meeting.
