@legally_brunette_daily: The Katie Zacharia situation is exactly why legal ethics rules matter. So many people, including law students, were arguing that she could call herself a lawyer despite not being licensed to practice law. There’s a reason our profession has strict rules about how we represent ourselves and our qualifications. These rules exist to protect the public, and abiding by them is not optional. Future law students and lawyers, take note! #presssecretary #katiezacharia #lawstudent #lawschool #lawyers
The internet experts are still arguing with me about this fact: Once you are admitted to practice (sworn in) then you are a lawyer and/or attorney. Not before.

As a corporate lawyer, I am a little offended that people believe someone can be a corporate lawyer without a license.

Also, when she said she was just providing legal analysis, not legal advice, as though those two things are meaningfully different 🙃

I think it’s an urban myth. Some people, especially unlicensed new grads and people who haven’t passed the bar or are unlicensed, cling onto the simple definition some dictionaries give for the word lawyer, which don’t reference licensure. Also, many of these AI models are telling people that it is okay to call an unlicensed person a lawyer because their model is pulling from inaccurate statements posted on social media. It’s very concerning. Someone ought to write a law review article on this.

She probably knew this, didn’t she. She was just straight up lying? Or believing what she wanted to believe?

When med students graduate, they are doctors, even if their licensing stuff is incomplete. They couldn’t treat people until that was taken care of, of course; but maybe that’s where that assumption comes from?

It is kind of scary even that tv news might have legal commentators who like can't pass the bar/are disbarred. Like just putting random people w/o established knowledge is scary

Did you see the Andy Harris clip where he asks a reporter if they are a lawyer - reporter asks Harris “are you?” And he says “yeah I’m a legislator “ or something like that.. which is also kind of wild in the same week.

Pragmatically depressing :
Blacks, common law, some academics and incredibly precise, expert opinions sometimes mention someone attended law school. And is not a member in good standing with the bar or local equivalent

As someone studying for the LSAT, how did she even get into law school when a major aspect of that test is necessary vs. sufficient? Graduating law school is generally necessary (state dependent), but not sufficient to be a licensed attorney.

AI gave out misinformation and everyone ran with it without questioning the AI’s response. Once you tell the AI the distinction is wrong then it corrects itself, but non lawyers wouldn’t know that

the NYS attorney admission gang (1st dept) famously rejects your application if you even write ASSOCIATE on your bar application (unless you are admitted elsewhere). until admitted you are a "law clerk".
