El Salvador President Nayib Bukele is reportedly saying he will allow Bibles in schools. The quote circulating online says the Bible is "the only book that truly transforms lives for the better." We could not find the original source of that exact wording. What we did find is that Bukele has spoken about God's word before. In a video reported by Diario El Mundo, he said the word of God can be read, and not only in schools. In the same video, he criticized bans on Bible reading in prisons and on preaching in public plazas. Religion in classrooms has long been debated in El Salvador. A survey from Universidad Francisco Gavidia reportedly found that about 95% of Salvadorans support Bible reading in schools. Not everyone agrees, though. Archbishop José Luis Escobar Alas has said that imposing moral and spiritual content does not work. He also warned of an endless debate over which Bible would be used. Bukele's government has also removed what it calls "gender ideology" from school materials and has pushed to bring God, morality and civics back into education. Supporters say faith can guide young people away from violence and toward better choices. Critics say public schools should stay neutral and that students of all beliefs should feel welcome. Whether this exact statement is confirmed or not, it has clearly struck a nerve.
